10 places to find the best breakfast in Prague

1. Cafe Hrnek
This weekend, be tempted by the brunch special at Cafe Hrnek in Holešovice. Seasonal changes and the creativity of the chefs are bold on their menu – recently they served a wholemeal pancake topped with rhubarb, milk cream and lemon balm sugar, dandelion buds in lime caramel and granola. Or would you rather stick to the classics with scrambled eggs on homemade toasted bread, with fresh cheese and dehydrated egg yolk?
2. U Kalendů
A morning walk on the river deserves some company! Stop by the U Kalendů bakery, and take at least one croissant along for the ride. If you spot a bun or pastry in the window, don't think twice and treat yourself. It will please you as much as their fresh bread with butter and egg. Will you go for a filter coffee or a cappuccino?
3. Café Savoy
Sooner or later, breakfast lovers have to sit down at a table at Café Savoy and dig into a croissant with scrambled eggs and truffle. The genius loci calls for the famous Eggs Benedict or Eggs Royale on an English muffin with sour cream, marinated salmon, hollandaise and caviar. Such a feast calls for a cup of something specuial – how about an espresso with calvados, tonic water and sweet vinegar from Utopia?
4. Eska
Eska is not to be missed on the map of breakfast spots. Head here for a long gourmet breakfast, or a quick omelette, toasted pastry with cheese and tomato sauce or pastries with butter, jam and cocoa – and ask the staff if they have any chocolate termix left in the fridge!
If we had to recommend one thing, it would be their fermented wheat with egg and mushrooms – because if you wanted to make it at home, you wouldn't be having breakfast until the day after tomorrow.
Tip: Take a couple of "loupák" rolls with you when you leave Eska – you can fry them with hollandaise sauce, smoked trout and poached egg.
5. Etapa
Just a few blocks away, lines form for breakfast at the Etapa bistro. Go for the famous scrambled eggs with coriander, chilli and salty granola, or the sourdough waffle in a savoury or sweet version. The menu largely rotates according to the harvest – if you've got room left, try the rice porridge with mulberry, rhubarb, kombucha syrup and white poppy seed oil.
Tip: Order a maxi "loupák" for Wednesday and Saturday – 600g of joy to share!
6. Trikolonial
On Fridays, head to Trikolonial in Smichov. From early in the morning, there is the smell of double-filled kolache baked once a week by the chefs from the Ze mě project – they fill them with curd cheese and baked plums with apple cider vinegar. You'll also have to fit a loaf of bread, a couple of nutty buns with tonka beans or kombucha made by the owner Michal Burda into your bag. You'll love it!
Tip: The limited edition kolache can also be picked up at Coffee and Riot, The Bowls, and Grounds in Karlín.
7. Goodlok
At Jungmann Square, they're juicing, fermenting, and brewing! From Monday to Friday, you'll find "experimental" breakfasts that will fine-tune your day and your gut microbiome. The staff will bring you an omelette with nori seaweed and pea miso paste, a grilled cheese sandwich with kimchi or porridge with koji honey, and you can choose your own kefir and fresh juices from the cooler, all made with with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Cheers to that!
8. Café Jen
The Vršovice area is fond of Café Jen, which has been serving breakfast and brunch for nine years. Regulars can't get enough of the breakfast of champions – scrambled eggs from Mr Kubát, sausages from Amaso, a bun, some bread and butter. In addition, they are bringing back the true "breakfast specials" and celebrate mornings with a choice coffee and a glass of mimosa. Will you join us?
Tip: Café Jen also runs Snack Catering, and will deliver your breakfast to work, too! Will you choose from the regular menu, or will you and your colleagues want something bespoke?
9. Další kus
Can't imagine breakfast without crumbs? Stop in for a bread roll at the Další kus in Vinohrady, and ask for the egg mayonaisse, or the Parisian salad. At the cash register, you can't miss the display of savoury buns, galettes and cakes with often adventurous fillings. Just right to fit in your hand!
10. Kro Coffee
Expand your breakfast horizons at Kro Coffee in Vinohrady, and look forward to hazelnut tempeh, bean hummus, egg and grilled vegetables, or a quesadilla with sausage, cheddar, kimchi and fermented pepper dip. Then extend your weekend breakfast in the garden with pancakes with caramelised strawberries and sweet curd cream.
