6 things you didn't know about beer

Good beer and honest cooking

We serve beer that's fresh, right to the last sip, and real home cooking. Lokál is a place where good beer and honest food matter.
1. Pilsner-type beer contains up to 94% water
Maybe that's why we reach for it so often when it's hot outside. This type of beer also contains a large amount of carbon dioxide, which gives it a bite that is pleasantly refreshing.
2. The first Pilsner beer was tapped in the centre of old Prague
Specifically in 1842, in Mr Knobloch's restaurant in the U Modré štiky house, in today's Karlova street. "It's a pity that this place no longer exists, it would be nice to go back there. Just like to the hotel at the Golden Eagle, where the lager was first tasted in Pilsen. The communists demolished it and built the Central Hotel instead," sighs Lukáš Svoboda.
3. Even the bartender can work magic with foam
Baristas are not the only ones with a talent for painting pictures in foam. Experienced bartenders can cut out a bubble or a snowman in no time. "These enhancements are often only for the regulars standing at the bar, because the picture in the foam won't survive the journey to the table. Women didn't use to frequent pubs much, so if one happened to show up, the bartender would paint a heart on the foam," laughs Lukáš.
4. You should drink your pint within half an hour
The quality of the beer decreases as time goes on – the temperature increases, the bite fades and the head falls. The most important thing is that you enjoy the beer to the last sip. You should therefore be able to finish the beer within 30 minutes. Is that too fast for you? Lukas recommends ordering the specific Czech pours of šnyt or hladinka. It's the only way to enjoy the same quality beer all the way through.
5. The beer belly doesn't actually grow from the beer
Beer itself doesn't contain cholesterol or fat. "The 'beer belly' comes from the sugar in the beer, and is quite closely related to the number of pints drunk and the lifestyle that comes from sitting in the pub on a regular basis. In addition, beer boosts the secretion of gastric juices, making us more hungry.
Lukáš has been bravely fighting against beer belly all his life – he sucks in his stomach two hundred times a day. Do you know how he figured out this trick? Around 1995, he got his hands on an issue of the girls' magazine Popcorn, in which the singer Madonna advised how to keep a slim figure. He said it really works, and it's a subtle exercise you can practice behind the bar.
6. The bartenders at Lokál pour a pint in 10 seconds.
Beer is properly tapped in one go, so it only takes the bartender 10 seconds. However, Lukáš Svoboda's record is a swift 4 seconds. In comparison, cut beer is tapped twice, so guests have to wait up to 7 minutes for it.
