A pint in Prague: Pult beer bar selects new lagers every year

Since opening in 2021, Pult has offered six perfectly curated lagers on tap. Two of the taps permanently occupied by the national brewery Budějovický Budvar and Plzeňský Prazdroj, the patriach of lagers in the Czech Republic. Four additional beers are selected each year, with drinkability being the main criteria.
Which lagers will be on tap at Pult the following year is decided by a tasting board. This is a ten-member panel made up of bartenders, brewers and other gastronomy experts, and last but not least, their regulars. Its core are four permanent members: the general manager of Pult, Tereza Pospíšilová, Lucie Janečková from the PIVO Institute, master bartender Lukáš Svoboda, who was at the birth of Lokál, and Míra Bouchal from Lokál CZ.
This year the tasting board met in June to over two days to taste a record twenty-three lagers – a selection process to which the breweries apply themselves. "We started the applications right after the New Year and this time the interest was enormous, which is a great joy and responsibility for us. During the spring I visited all the breweries and spoke to their brewers to introduce the Pult concept in more detail. Now I'm I'm going to revisit the four winners. I'll be taking our tappers with me, and we'll be partially involved in the production of the beer that guests will then enjoy on tap. The selection of new lagers is therefore not just a matter of two days with a tasting board, but a year-round activity," explains Tereza Pospíšilová, who, together with Lucie Janečková, is responsible for organising the tasting board and communicating with the breweries.
Drinkability above all
The tasting itself takes place in Pult. The members of the board taste samples from the local tap, at the same temperature and in the same glasses in which the beer is then served to guests. The beer is served under the same conditions as business as usual.
The only change is that they get a small beer on tap in a large beer glass, so that all the aromas and flavours can be brought out better. Several aspects are evaluated, including aroma, flavour and bite, and above all drinkability.
Who won?
The best drinkability this year was demonstrated by Únětice beer 12° (Únětice brewery), Světlý lager 12° (Permon brewery), Vorkloster monastery lager (Porta Coeli monastery brewery) and Jura (Chroust brewery). Guests will now find all of these on tap at Pult.
"This year we are rotating all four beers, and these breweries are appearing on tap at Pult for the first time. Guests really have something to look forward to," adds Tereza Pospíšilová. The unveiling of the new line-up of lagers and the tapping of the first casks took place in tandem with the bar's third birthday celebration.
